Wooden toy trade glossary

The terms that come up in a wooden toy quotation, in plain language. If a supplier uses a term you do not recognise, ask them to define it in the proforma invoice.

MOQMinimum order quantity — the smallest number of pieces we will produce in one run, per SKU.
FOBFree on board: the price includes delivery to the named port and loading, not ocean freight or insurance.
EXWEx works: the buyer collects from our workshop and handles export and freight.
CIFCost, insurance and freight: we arrange freight and insurance to the destination port.
EN71The European toy safety standard, in three parts: mechanical, flammability and migration of elements.
ASTM F963The US toy safety standard, covering mechanical, chemical and labeling requirements.
CPSIAThe US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which sets lead and phthalate limits for children's products.
CPCChildren's Product Certificate — the US document issued by the importer certifying compliance.
CE markingThe EU conformity mark, supported by a declaration of conformity and test reports.
Small partsParts that fit a small-parts cylinder; a product with such parts cannot be sold for children under three.
Age gradingThe age band a product is designed and tested for, which drives warnings and small-parts rules.
DielineThe flat layout of a printed box or package, showing cuts, folds and artwork placement.
PDQPretty darn quick — a shelf-ready display carton used in retail.
LCLLess than container load: your cargo shares a container with other shipments.
FCLFull container load: a container is used by one shipper.
MOQ breakA quantity at which the unit price drops, usually because a print run or a cutting run is amortised.
Lead timeThe time from order confirmation to goods being ready for shipment.
Water-based finishA paint or lacquer carried in water rather than solvent, with lower VOC and a different cure profile.
